The small
town of Zainabad, 105 km northwest of Ahmedabad, is very
close to the Little Rann of Kutch - the barran expanse of
‘desert’ (actually salt plains), which divides Gujarat’s
western region of Kutch from the rest of Gujarat. Zainabad
is a house of wild Ass. The Asiatic Wild Ass i.e. Gudkhur
are found only in the Little Rann of Kutch. Besides the
Wild Ass animals like the Blue Bull i.e. Nilgai, Chin
Kara, Black Buck may be easily spotted. Then there are
carnivores like the Wolf, Jackals, Foxes, Jungle and
Desert Cats. Zainabad and the Little Rann are rich in the
population of migratory birds too. There are the Flamingos
that throng the marshes and the cranes that add life to
the desolate Rann. The bird watcher's paradise Zainabad
has a large number of waterfowl, waders, raptors and
ground birds such as Larks, Sand grouse and the endangered
Hubara Bustard. In all over 300 different species of birds
may be spotted here. This is the home of the rare Indian
Wild Ass and the Hubara Bustard. Tucked into the western
edge of India, the Rann of Kutch is more famous for its
natural salt plains.
