Somnath

Gujarat

Temple of Somnath was built by the Moon God and was made of gold. After it was razed to the ground, Ravana rebuilt it with silver. This is the first among the twelve Jyotirlings. Since ancient times, Prabhas Patan has been a pilgrimage, being the confluence of the mythological Saraswati, Hiranya and Kapil. Sardar Patel commissioned the present temple in the 1950s.

Temple is impressive; the aura of devotion even more awesome, but the high point is its location by the blue waters of the Arabian Sea. The Somnath beach is unshaded but lovely, the views stupendous, you can enjoy cool, fresh coconuts, camel rides, spray of the waves as you wade along the shoreline.
