India has
the distinction of being the last earthly refuge of the
Asiatic lion. In the paisley-shaped Kathiawad peninsula of
Gujarat stands the Gir National Park and Lion Sanctuary.
Sasan Gir Lion Sanctuary is home of some 300 Asiatic
lions. The terrain is rugged with steep rocky hillsides.
Sasan Gir is the only place in the world outside the
African continent where the lion can be seen in its
natural habitat. A few springs also exist, but their flow
is rather eccentric depending upon the season. Some sixty
thousand tourists visited Sasan Gir National Park in Every
Year. The park is a part of the Junagadh circuit of
Gujarat, which includes Junagadh, Sasan Gir, and Somnath.
Gir has also leopards and numerous chital, nilgai, chin
Kara, the four horned antelope and wild boar.
Jeep safaris and wild life photography expeditions are the
favorites tourist activities here. Watchtowers and hides
have been raised near waterholes to allow visitors a
closer look of the lions.
