Patan, sometimes 132 Kms. northwest
of Ahmedabad, this was as an ancient Hindu capital before
Mahmud of
Ghazi sacked it in 1024. Patan, the capital of
Gujarat from the 8th century till Ahmed Shah moved his
seat of power to the larger and more impressive citadel of
Ahmedabad in the 15th century. Patan is the only center of
unique weaving craft of 'Patola' since the time of King
Kumarpal (ruled 1143-73 AD).
Rani Ki Vav
Rani Ki Vav is an excellent example of subterranean
architecture of Gujarat. Rani Ki Vav believed to have been
constructed by Udayamati, the queen of Bhimdeva I (1022-63
AD). The carved sidewalls, pillars, beams, series of steps
and platforms lead to the elaborately carved water well.
Every surface is adorned with finely chiseled sculptures
of maidens and Hindu deities, religious motifs and
geometrical patterns.
Patola weaving
Patan is the only center of unique weaving craft of 'Patola'
since the time of King Kumarpal (ruled 1143-73 AD). Even
today, this age a few families practise old traditional
weaving craft.
Sahastralinga Talav
The Talav is reputed has been built by Siddharaja Jaisinh,
the Chalukkyan ruler. It occupies the northwestern part of
the city. It's on the left bank of the river Saraswati.
The tank used to receive water from a canal of the
Saraswati River and had spread of about five km with
masonry embankments.
