99 Kms from Ahmedabad, the 11th
century Sun temple of Modhera is easily one of the finest
examples of devotional in western India. Modhera is famous
for its Sun Temple, the best example of Solanki temple
architecture in the state and one of the most magnificent
monuments in Gujarat. Built in 1026AD the temple is
dedicated to the Sun God, Surya and stands high on a
plinth overlooking a deep stone- steeped tank.
Sun Temple
Bhima Deva of the Solanki Rajput clan built the Sun
Temple. The building work was commissioned to the Silvat
stonemasons who had the ability to make to make the
hardest stone take on the quality of the delicate
woodcarvings. The Sun Temple has a rectangular step tank
or Surya Kund with about 108 shrines. Modhera 's sun
temple is positioned in such a manner that at the
equinoxes the rising sun strikes the images in the
sanctuary, which at other times languish in a dim
half-light.
