Jamnagar, or the city of Jams, was one of the most
important princely states of Saurashtra. Jamnagar, also
known as the 'Jewel of Kathiawad', is a coastal town about
300 Kms from Ahmedabad. The Jadeja Rajputs, known as Jams,
built the 450-year-old city of Jamnagar. This is the same
lineage that gave the world cricket players like Ranji,
Dilip Singh, and Ajay Jadeja. Jamnagar is renowned for its
silk, gold embroidery, silver ware, Bandhani (tie-and-dye)
fabrics that are renowned the world over. Nutcrackers
(especially the ones made for betel nuts) made in Jamnagar
are in great demand all over India.
Lakhota Palace
Lakhota Fort is Jamnagar museum and its terraces display a
fine collection of sculpture that spans a period from the
9th to 18th century. In the center of old Jamnagar, on an
island in the middle of the lake, are two magnificent old
structures: the Lakhota Fort and the Kotha Bastion. The
Kotha Bastion is Jamnagar’s arsenal. One of its most
interesting sights is an old well, the water of which can
be drawn by blowing into a small hole in the floor.
Solarium
Known as the Ranjit Institute of Poly-Radio Therapy. A
slowly revolving tower provides full daylong sunlight. It
is open to visitors after working hours.
Pirotan Island
It is 16 Kms. from Bedi Port and is one of the main
islands in the Gulf of Kutch. This island is the site of
the Marine Sanctuary & Marine National Park. Pirotan
Island has been used by WWF-India since 1978 since a site
for nature education camps for school children.
Durbar Gadh
The center of the old town was once an important place
where the Maharaja of Nawanagar held public audiences.
