In 1670, a small-armed band of the Arabs of Muscat
surprised and plundered the fortress, retiring with the
booty they had acquired. Since that happening, the other
most worthy event occurred in connection with the
liberation of Portuguese settlement-'Operation Vijay' just
before the midnight of December 16, 1961, ending the
colonial rule. The different land blocks on the west coast
of India, Daman, Diu and Goa came to form one political
unit after liberation from the erstwhile Portuguese regime
in 1961. In 1987, when Goa becomes a full-fledged state,
Daman and Diu was separated from Goa.
Daman and Diu is the second smallest union territory of
India. Daman and Diu are actually two parts, both on the
seaside and both enclosed by Gujarat. Fishing and salt is
main industrial product due as many parts and liquor is
not prohibited.
The main tourist attractions are St.Paul's Church Diu
museum and there are many beaches around the island.
St.Paul's Church
St Paul's Church built in 1601. The outside of the Church
built in Gothic style is very beautiful. So also is the
interior decoration with carvings in Burma teak. In a old
church a Hospital has been established recently.
Diu Museum
The old St.Thomas Church has been converted into a museum
which houses the antique stone inscriptions of the earlier
rulers, wooden carvings, idols, shadow-clocks and other
important artifacts have been collected from various sites
and displayed.
Diu Fort
The Diu fort is an imposing structure constructed around
the year 1541. It is surrounded by sea on three sides. The
fort has canons, which reminds one of the struggles
between the Bahadurshah, Sultan of Gujarat, Humayun, the
Mughal Emperor and the Portuguese. The deep canals
flanking the fort, the giant watch tower (now converted
into a lighthouse), the cannons, the vestiges of foregone
battles (like mounds of iron shells from enemy cannons),
the stone galleries, and gigantic windows.
Diu Beaches
Nagoa beach in Diu, a horseshoe shaped white-sanded beach,
is one of the best beaches of the world. Other beaches in Diu are Ahmedpur, Mandvi, Chakratirath, Jallandhar and
Gomtimata. Water sports, camel and pony riding are
provided on the beaches.
Chakratirath beach serves the locals as well as domestic
and international tourists, providing them with an
opportunity to have a worthwhile break.
The Ghoghala Beach is among the six beautiful beaches in
Diu District. A tourist complex built here provides all
basic amenities to tourists.
