Sultan Mahmud Begara subjugated located 47km northeast of
Vadodara, the town of Champaner in 1484. The town derives
its name from the champa tree. Champaner is an ancient
fort located at the foothills of Pavagadh. The entire
landscape for miles around is scattered with remains of
fort walls, ruined tombs, gardens, arches, pillars and
wells.
Nagina Masjid
Nagina mosque is also called the Jewel Mosque as it is
built of pure white stone.
Jumma Masjid
Jami Masjid is one of the finest examples of Sultanate
architecture of Gujarat. It is an imposing structure on a
high plinth with two tall minarets of 30-meter height, 172
pillars, and 7 mihrab. On account of its massive grandeur
and perfect finish, the Jumma Masjid is one of the
grandest Islamic monuments in Western India. The central
dome, the placement of balconies and carved entrance gates
with fine stone jails and rich decoration make the visit a
delightful aesthetic experience.
Hill of Pavagadh
The Hill of Pavagadh, with its ruined fort, rises beside
Champaner in three levels. In the month of Chaitra (March/
April) a major festival takes place at the foot of
Pavagadh Hill, honoring the goddess Mahakali. In 1553 the
Mughal, led by Humayun himself, scaled the fort walls
using iron spikes driven into the rocks, and captured both
the fort and its city.
