Bhavnagar is situated about 250 km away from Ahmedabad,
founded by Bhavsinhji Gohil. Founded as a port in 1743,
Bhavnagar is still an important trading post for the
cotton goods manufactured in Gujarat. Bhavnagar is known
for Gandhi Smriti, an institution built in memory of
Mahatma Gandhi, the Barton Museum, the Central Salt and
Marine Research Institute, Takhteshwar temple and
Gauri-Shankar Lake.
Takhteshwar Temple
Takhteshwar, a holy temple of Lord Shiva, was named in the
memory of late Maharaja Takhtsinhji. Takhteshwar Temple
(1893 AD) is located on a hill, on a high plinth, offering
a commanding view of Bhavnagar. Takhteshwar Temple is made
of pure marble and constructed in the late nineteenth
century; the temple is situated on a hillock.
Barton Library And Museum
Barton Museum houses the private collection of Colonel
Barton, an important British representative in Saurashtra.
This is the oldest and the renowned library of Saurashtra,
which has evolved into a cultural center. The
coin-collection is the chief attraction of its museum. Old
books, manuscripts, rare coins, arms and arm our used by
the rulers of Bhavnagar are on display at the Barton
Library and Museum.
Gauri-Shankar Lake
Gauri-Shankar Lake is a charming picnic spot. Near the
lake is a beautifully laid out park and a children's
planetarium. The lake has a pretty location far removed
from the bustle of the city, with a rich array of bird
life especially in winter.
Gandhi Smriti
Gandhi Smriti, an institution built in memory of Mahatma
Gandhi. This institution houses a library, a museum and a
gallery of photographs depicting the life of Gandhi.
Established with an objective of keeping Gandhi a thought
alive, Gandhi Smriti is a living monument to Gandhi.
